This was a must win for various reasons. To bounce back from the defeat up north, to show Carrick’s ability to handle a setback, and to consolidate the 3rd position. 

Sesko was dropped and Amad walked back into the starting line-up for this one. For long stretches of the first half, it felt like one of those afternoons where frustration simmered more than excitement. From a United supporter’s perspective, the opening 45 minutes against Aston Villa lacked urgency and imagination. United dominated possession, but the tempo was simply too slow to trouble Villa’s organised defensive block. Too often the ball moved sideways rather than forward, and the front players seemed reluctant to take risks in the final third.

There was plenty of control, but very little incision. The midfield circulated the ball patiently, yet the attacking line rarely attempted the kind of daring runs or quick combinations needed to break Villa down. Too many attacks fizzled out before they had properly begun. And the first half passed without really forcing the Villa goalkeeper into meaningful action. It was the sort of half that left us supporters muttering that the team needed to be braver, quicker, and more direct.

Fortunately, the second half was a completely different story.

Whatever Carrick said in the dressing room clearly had an effect, because United came out with much greater intent. The tempo immediately increased, passes were played forward earlier, and the attacking players began to run at defenders instead of hesitating.

The breakthrough arrived when Casemiro rose to head home and ignite OT. The goal lifted the stadium and transformed the atmosphere. What had been a cagey contest suddenly became open and energetic.

Villa responded when Barkley equalised, but instead of unsettling United it seemed to sharpen our focus. We pushed forward again with renewed purpose. The attacking play now had the risk-taking that had been missing earlier — direct running, quick passing, and far more movement between the lines.

United regained the lead through Cunha after a slick attacking move and yet another assist by Bruno, and from that point the momentum was firmly with us. Villa struggled to contain the wave of pressure that followed. The third goal, finished by Šeško with a bit of luck, effectively sealed the victory and capped a strong second-half performance.

In the end, the 3–1 win for United felt thoroughly deserved, even if the journey there was uneven. The first half may have been too cautious and predictable, but the response after the break showed the attacking quality this team possesses when it plays with confidence and urgency.

If United can bring that second-half intensity from the start in future matches, OT will see many more afternoons like this — with excitement, goals, and three points to celebrate…Numquam Moribimur.
