From a United perspective, this 2–2 draw away at AFC Bournemouth will be remembered less for the football and more for officiating that felt wildly inconsistent (and that’s me being polite) — and ultimately decisive in my opinion. 

The game itself was chaotic, particularly after the break. After a first half in which United were the better side but we missed the cutting edge the match came to life in the second half.

United deservedly went ahead through Bruno, who converted from the penalty spot just after the hour mark when Cunha burst into the box and was clearly pulled back. Bruno kept calm and made it 1-0.. At that point, United looked composed and in command, managing Bournemouth’s threat while probing for a second.

With the score at 1–0, Amad appeared to be clearly fouled in the box but the ref did not have the guts to point to the spot again, and within seconds Bournemouth went on the other side and equalised — and crucially, VAR did not intervene. That swing wasn’t just frustrating — it fundamentally altered the match.

To their credit, the United players responded well. Pressure from a Bruno corner led to a James Hill own goal, restoring the lead. At that stage, the narrative should have been about United’s resilience and attacking quality. Instead, the referee ensured the controversy escalated.

With around ten minutes remaining, Harry Maguire was penalised for a foul on Evanilson inside the box. This time, not only was a penalty awarded, but Maguire was also sent off. Kroupi converted to make it 2–2 and we had to play the remaining minutes with a player less. 

It is 2 points lost, or rather stolen, in my opinion. The ref denied us a stone wall pen which could have potentially given us a 2 goal lead. He punished us further with a straight red to Maguire for a foul that was very similar to what Amad was subjected to. 

We move on, with many positives to take despite a tough match and a nincompoop of a ref. We have become much more resilient under Carrick. We still concede too many gaps in midfield at times but the team is more compact and although I would like to see us carry more threat up front, I believe in this team and what I am seeing. We now have an unusually long break. Let us hope we come back with the same attitude and resilience to secure a top-4 spot and CL football next season…Numquam Moribimur.
