Man Utd 3
Newcastle 2
United returned to winning ways to at least give the home supporters a somewhat positive end to what has been a dismal season in which the United supporters had to witness their beloved team collect only 33 points from a potential 57! Simply not good enough.
ETH changed tactics and it worked on the night. Playing with a false 9 we created more chances than when we played a striker that was not getting a sniff at goal. Mainoo gave us the lead when he found himself with time and space to slide the ball home after 31 minutes. Just after HT Newcastle equalised and it had been coming. Once again, another goal conceded though poor defending on the flanks and the central defence struggling with crosses.
Diallo restored the lead with a sweetly struck half volley that went straight in between the Geordie’s defence and into the net. Hojlund, on as a sub, got the 3rd with a shot from just outside the box that the opposing keeper, quite frankly, should have saved. Newcastle pulled one back with a shot from outside which again gave me the impression that it was within a keeper’s reach. Maybe I am expecting too much but I believe a good percentage of goals conceded were saveable if we had a decent keeper. Hopes Onana proves me wrong if he is around next season.
The season ends on Sunday – away at Brighton and then ETH has one week to prepare for the FA Cup final. I just hope that we show up and have a go at them, something we did not do last season at Wembley…Numquam Moribimur!
