Man Utd 1
Brighton & Hove Albion 2
The FA Cup tie against Brighton was approached with cautious optimism, also because this was a lifeline to yet another disappointing season. A home cup match should be an occasion, particularly against a side we ought to fear but still believe we can overcome. Instead, this felt like another evening that exposed just how far standards have slipped.
From the opening minutes, United looked uncertain. The tempo was slow, the passing lacked conviction, and there was a worrying absence of authority in midfield. Brighton, by contrast, appeared calm and purposeful, moving the ball with confidence and pressing intelligently. Too often, we seemed to react rather than impose ourselves, which is never a good sign at Old Trafford.
There were moments when hope briefly flickered. A couple of attacking phases suggested we might finally seize control, but they came to nothing. Final balls were rushed, decision-making was poor, and promising positions were wasted. It felt as though every mistake invited more pressure, and Brighton were only too happy to take advantage.
What hurt most was not simply the defeat, but the manner of it. This was a cup match at home, yet the urgency and fight expected on such an occasion were sadly missing. Heads dropped far too easily, and leadership on the pitch was hard to identify when it mattered most.
As the final whistle blew, the disappointment was palpable. Losing to a well-coached Brighton side is not, in itself, a disgrace. However, watching our beloved team go out of the FA Cup at home without truly asserting themselves is deeply troubling. For supporters, this match felt less like an isolated setback and more like another chapter in an ongoing decline that shows no easy answers. Fletcher seemed out of his depth and there are some players who are simply not good enough and keep getting played – see Dalot. Very disappointed with the sending off of Lacey after he received two yellow cards late in the match — the second for dissent. Maybe it is the fire in the belly that almost all United players are missing, or maybe it was just frustration. Nevertheless I see a promise in that kid. I would play a few of them between now and the end of the season. If you’re good enough, you’re old enough…Numquam Moribimur.
