Stalemate at Merseyside

Liverpool 0

Man Utd 0

The staunchest United fan would admit that for long stretches of the match we were simply playing defence vs attack. The first half was certainly the case and to be honest, I did not think we could hold on as recent displays did not suggest we could keep a clean sheet today. However, the defence did it’s job and Mainoo and Amrabat did a decent job protecting the defence. 0-0 at HT.

In the second half, United started creating something going forward and as our opponents pushed forward to find a winner, we did create a couple of decent attacks that with a little bit of incisiveness could have given us a smash and grab win. That is asking a bit too much of this United side though.

The ABUs will no doubt point to the penalty appeal when Shaw handled the ball inside the box – yes it did hit his hand, but anyone who wants to be objective would admit that it came off his leg. The match ended with the most absurd red card I have seen in many many years. Two successive yellow cards for protesting is not only uncommon, it is outright obscene! Dalot did not even continue protesting after the first yellow. United should appeal this in my opinion.

In the end, we managed to get the first draw of the season and deny Liverpool going top. Am I happy with the result? Given the current form, yes, but I expect Manchester United to play more positively and create a threat going forward.

To end on a positive, Varane and Evans were immense at the heart of the defence. And that boy Mainoo can play…give him more match time please ETH. My impression is that today’s point will reduce the pressure on ETH….NUMQUAM MORIBIMUR!
